what is the best way to stop the rear seat from rattling

my rear seat(drivers side) just rattles badly

if i undo the seat, from the clip, and let it hang down, it is silent

can they be adjusted to clamp better ? or just put some high density foam there to "make" it clamp tighter

What do you mean "hang down"? Isn't the seat on the floor already?

the rear of the seat is in an upright position, if you unclip it from the catch at the top, it hangs down, or lies almost flat on the the actual seat

Inspect the clip and the back of the seat closely with good lightning. Something may be loose or there might be adjustment screws to tighten the hold.
Also, compare it to the other seat.

sounds like you didnt push it back all the way to clip into the latch.

for me when i need to put them back up, i slam them into the latch. literally slam it! it wont break anything. be forceful.
it will then lock into place.
try that method and get back to us here.

the seat is back correctly, and slammed a few times !!!

i have put some high density 25mm wide, 20mm thick foam near the clip.. this makes a constant push back on the back of the seat, which keeps the clip "gripping" the metal catch.
also taken out the parcel shelf, which makes a huge difference !!!

i intend lining the parcel shelf area, the bits that touch the plastic, with sticky back felt

Had the same problem with my MK7.5 GTI The dealer had to replace the latch which solved the problem for about a year. When the rattle returned i wrapped electrical tape to the pin mounted to the body side. Problem solved.
